Between the Twilight
I sat in the fleeting moment where golden hour melts into the blue twilight, surrounded by hundreds of people. Gradually, I felt my fear of heights creeping in as the sun began to set. I wandered through the Mahanakhon Skywalk, trying to stay inside as long as possible, but the reflections ruined every photo, forcing me to step outside.
The crowded elevator going up one story left me no choice but to take the stairs. I’ve been using my legs since birth, so I consider myself a professional, yet sweat began pooling between my toes with every shaky step. I had already spent 45 minutes inside the tower, and thankfully, there was no time limit. By mistake, I had purchased a ticket for golden hour. I realized this was an opportunity: a million-dollar view for only 1,000 baht (around $28 USD).
I found a seat in the very center, the perfect spot for photos and a chance to steady my nerves. Slowly, my body began to settle. My senses tuned themselves to the external world. My eyes locked on the west, where hundreds of smiles stretched from ear to ear, their joy piercing through the silhouettes. I heard the laughter of strangers with their friends and family—a kind of pure, unfiltered authenticity that was both grounding and uplifting.
After a few hours of soaking it all in, I noticed my internal anxieties had melted away. One thought lingered in my mind: Happiness can be found at any moment, so long as I pay careful attention.
While we are often encouraged to cultivate happiness internally, there is undeniable value in looking outward now and then. Observing the world around us can provide inspiration and ensure our perspective doesn’t become stale or rigid.
With dry toes, a softened view of heights, and the sound of laughter stored in my memory bank, I descended via a very smelly and crowded elevator, content and inspired by the experience.
